VTA stallion season auction set for Feb. 14-15

Some serious matchmaking is set to take place. Because of Valentine’s Day, you ask?

Not exactly. It’s because of what’s about to happen on Valentine’s Day: the Virginia Thoroughbred Association hosts its annual stallion season auction from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14, with final bidding to take place the following day.

The proceeds from the auction benefit the VTA in its vital work to “cultivate the development of the Commonwealth’s heritage as a producer of quality Thoroughbred horses.”

The VTA has attracted seasons from dozens of stallions from all over the country, including numerous high-demand studs already booked full. This group includes Forte, Omaha Beach, Yaupon, Maximus Mischief, and Flameaway.

While the auction includes stallions from Kentucky, Florida, and other distant ports of call, for those looking a little closer to home, there is also plenty on offer. That includes five Virginia-based stallions, five standing in West Virginia, and 13 more in Maryland.

There’s also something for every budget. If you’re looking for bargain stallions standing for just a couple thousand dollars, there are plenty to choose from. And there are also high-end animals like Good Magic, who stands for $125,000, Curlin ($250,000), and Street Sense ($60,000).

All seasons are offered without guarantee. Bidding is open Wednesday, with the top five bidders on each season advancing to final bidding on Thursday.
