Maryland Million 2024 to be run October 12

Maryland Million, Ltd. today issued the following press release:

Save the date! The 38th edition of Jim McKay Maryland Million Day will take place Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Laurel Park.

Jim McKay Maryland Million Day, Maryland’s Day at the Races, is designed to promote Maryland stallions, whose offspring compete in the races with purses and awards of over $1 million each year. 

“Jim McKay Maryland Million Day, now known as Maryland’s Day at the Races, celebrates Maryland’s horse industry. We have a an exciting race card and also welcome families and new fans,” says Cricket Goodall, executive director. “Every winner that day has a great story to tell. And the on-track entertainment between the races showcases all kinds of horse activities with a special kids area by the paddock.”

The 2023 edition featured a great day of racing action, including a 35-1 upset win by Ain’t Da Beer Cold (Freedom Child) in the Classic and a dominant score by Seven’s Eleven (Bandbox) in the Sprint. Wicked Prankster (Mosler) went gate-to-wire in the Turf, becoming the fifth horse to win the Turf in consecutive years. Murmur Farm’s Blofeld added another Maryland Million win to his resume, as Miss Harriett pulled a 62-1 surprise in the Lassie, marking Blofeld’s third Maryland Million winner in just three crops.

Jim McKay Maryland Million Day, modeled on the Breeders’ Cup and designed to spotlight the stallions, was first run in 1986 at Laurel Park. The day of racing celebrates the Maryland breeding and racing industry. The total economic impact of the horse racing industry in Maryland is $885 million, while the impact of the Maryland horse industry as a whole totals $2.9 billion.
