April Midlantic stakes schedule told
Charles Town Races will kick off its 2024 stakes schedule in April as Mid-Atlantic racing begins to heat up. Both Parx Racing and Laurel Park will also host stakes action during the month.
Charles Town’s first stake of the year will take place April 13. That’s the Original Gold for state-bred fillies and mares three and up going seven furlongs.
The track will host one stake on each of three consecutive Saturdays in April. On April 20 state-breds three and up will go 4 ½ furlongs in the Confucius Say, and one week later, state-bred three-year-old fillies will go the same distance in the It’s Binn Too Long.
On April 13 and April 20, Charles Town will be joined by Laurel Park in hosting added-money events. Laurel will roll out four stakes on April 13 and five more a week later. The April 20 card is especially notable because it contains several races that are local preps for Preakness weekend events. These include:
- The $125,000 Federico Tesio, which is a “win and in” for the Preakness May 18;
- The $125,000 Weber City Miss, which similarly grants entry to the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan May 17; and
- A pair of turf races, the Dahlia and Henry S. Clark, which are often used as local preps for the Grade 3 Gallorette and Grade 3 Dinner Party, respectively.
Parx Racing gets in on the stakes action April 22 when it hosts a pair of stakes. Both $100,000 events for Pennsylvania-breds, they are the Page McKenney for three-year-olds and up and the Unique Bella for fillies and mares.
