Charles Town jockeys and trainers to watch
Charles Town Races will host its first stakes of 2024 Saturday night when fillies and mares go postward in the $75,000 Original Gold. The contest is for state-bred distaffers going seven furlongs for a $75,000 purse.
As the new racing week kicks off, here’s a quick look at who’s hot among trainers and jockeys. We looked at the last three weeks of racing at Charles Town and compared how often jockeys and trainers won to what their takeout-adjusted odds would have predicted. Jockeys must have made at least 10 starts to appear on the list, and trainers, more than five. Here’s what we found:
In wins over the last three weeks, Arnaldo Bocachica (7-for-36) and Juan Nunez (7-for-31) topped the colony, with Christian Hiraldo and Marshall Mendez not far behind with six wins apiece…
Probably the hottest rider of all, though, was Larry Reynolds, who made the most of limited opportunities, winning five times from just 13 starts. That translated to 2.84 wins more than his odds would have predicted, or 8.33 wins above expectations per 50 starts…
Reynolds’ nearest pursuer was Angel Cruz, who went 4-for-10, good for a 7.99 wins above expectations per 50 starts. Those two were followed by Nunez (4.20 wins above expectations per 50 starts), Antonio Lopez (2.74), and Wesley Ho (2.69)…
Cruz has taken in 31% of available purse money, tops over the last three weeks, followed by Reynolds (25.7%)…
At the other end of the spectrum were Reshawn Latchman (-4.77 wins above expectations per 50 starts), Denis Araujo (-4.43), Gustavo Larrosa (-3.81), Orlando Bocachica (-2.65), and Keimar Trotman (-3.19).
Every rider but one to have made at least 10 starts at CT the last three weeks won at least one race. Anthony Mawing took the goose egg in 11 starts..
