Overnight Pow Wow turns tables in Its Binn Too Long
A sluggish start left Overnight Pow Wow behind the eight ball in an allowance contest at Charles Town Races March 16, and she could only watch as Jlodiamond motored to a decisive victory.
Overnight Pow Wow had no such trouble in Saturday’s $75,000 Its Binn Too Long Stakes for three-year-old state-bred fillies, and as a result, she turned the tables on that rival and went on to win by 1 ¾ lengths. Running time for 4 ½ furlongs on a wet fast main track was 52.25 seconds.
In their last meeting, her slow break had left Overnight Pow Wow in the chasing role, while Jlodiamond had it all her own way up front. This time, though, the Ricardo Rangel-trained Jlodiamond had plenty of early company: to her outside, from Overnight Pow Wow, who overcame a bump leaving the gate to press the pace, and to her inside, from Miss Bee Bop, who had bested her last November.
That trio – the 6-5 Miss Bee Bop, 2-1 Jlodiamond, and 6-1 Overnight Pow Wow – zipped through a 21.94-second opening quarter-mile. They were heads apart while already well clear of Lona Lee in fourth.
Rounding the turn, Miss Bee Bop threw in the towel, leaving Overnight Pow Wow and Jlodiamond to settle matters. In the lane, Overnight Pow Wow, with Reshawn Latchman up, inched away to the win, while Jlodiamond held second, one length ahead of Lona Lee. Miss Bee Bop faded to sixth.
The win was Overnight Pow Wow’s second from three career starts and pushed her bankroll to $66,959. It also snapped Jlodiamond’s two-race win streak.
Overnight Pow Wow paid a surprisingly generous $14.00 to win. The exacta returned $25.50 for a one-dollar wager.
Overnight Pow Wow is a three-year-old daughter of Fiber Sonde out of the Indian Charle mare Holy Pow Wow. She is a full-sister to the multiple graded stakes winner Late Night Pow Wow and the near-millionaire Muad’dib, who is still racing. Overnight Pow Wow was bred in West Virginia by the late John McKee and is trained by his widow, Cynthia McKee, for her Beau Ridge Farm LLC.
