Biscuitwiththeboss gobbles up first 2yo race in Maryland
In 2022, a Holy Boss filly named Bosserati won at first asking at Timonium, then scuffled for several races before trainer Brittany Russell put her on the turf, where she became a stakes winner.
Russell’s hoping history partially repeats itself – she could do without the scuffling part – with Biscuitwiththeboss, Bosserati’s two-year-old full sister. So far, so good:
With Angel Cruz in the irons, Biscuitwiththeboss inched away from pace rival Rapido Rosa and just held off the late run of Safe Trust to win Maryland’s first two-year-old race of the year Saturday at Laurel Park. She is now one-for-one in her career.
Running time for the 4 ½ furlongs was 53.66 seconds over a muddy, sealed main track. Biscuitwiththeboss, off as the second choice in a field of six, paid $6.00 to win. With the longest shot in the field, Safe Trust, in second, the exacta paid $26.90 for a one-dollar wager. Rapido Rosa finished third, 10 lengths clear of post time favorite Pure Majestic in fourth.
“I’m not trying to get them ready to go four and a half,” Russell said. “It’s just really not my style, but she got herself ready really quick.”
Biscuitwiththeboss was showing several works at Fair Hill on the page, and prior to that, Russell said, she had been in Middleburg, VA, getting started by Madison Meyers.
Meyers “sent her in and she said, ‘She won’t take long,’ and she was right,” Russell said. “She worked good and got her gate card.”
Biscuitwiththeboss is a homebred for Joel Politi. By Maryland sire Holy Boss, she is out of the Twirling Candy mare Candy Striper, whom Politi claimed for $50,000 out of her second career race.
Down the road a bit, there are plenty of options available for Biscuitwiththeboss. She’ll qualify, for example, for Maryland-bred and Maryland-sired races, the latter giving her the option to run in the Maryland Million. And, with a full sister who won a stake on the turf, she’ll almost certainly get a shot to do that, too.
That’s all off in the future, though. Right now… well, right now, there’s not much out there.
Likely the first nearby race for winning two-year-old fillies is the Astoria over Belmont Stakes weekend, this year run at Saratoga. That race is June 6, but Russell was decidedly noncommittal.
“We will probably have to consider it, but I also don’t want to do something detrimental to her development,” the trainer said. “So we’ll see how she comes out of it and see how it goes.”
She added, “You’re in sort of no man’s land, but you know what, it’s a good problem.”
