Charles Town picks and analysis: June 21, 2024
Picks and analysis for this evening’s card from Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races:
- DATE: June 21, 2024
- RACES ON CARD: 8
- CARRYOVERS: Jackpot Pick 6, $55,084
RACE 1
6. Calypso Ghost | Decent try in last going one turn and has had some success at two turns; might be controlling speed |
4. Dunder Boss | Makes third start off the bench and shifts into Brown barn (23% first with trainer) |
3. Practically There | We’ll give this one the nod over morning line fave #5; this one spotted the field about a mile leaving the gate in last and never really made up any ground but has better efforts, while the favorite has failed to complete the course or run poorly in three of four |
RACE 2
3. Vienna’s Twirl | Lightbulb on? Has better to run back to and broke maiden in last |
2. Sneaky Lynk | Might be a contentious pace, which would aid this one’s cause |
5. Cousin Winnie | Hasn’t quite been the same horse since being off eight months but fits with these |
RACE 3
3. Salty Starkey | Trainer Brown 16% with first-timers, and sire Friend or Foe 2-for-22; in a tepid field it’s worth taking a bit of a swing |
4. Tup’s to Take | Speedy sort should appreciate drop from special weight company |
8. Madman Jones | Got a bit of a freshening after poor special weight tries |
RACE 4
2. Diamond’s Cabaret | Return to main track likely puts this one in the winner’s circle; LRL maiden tries on turf not bad given quality company lines |
4. Senza Fine | Gets blinkers on; good to see Boca remain aboard |
1. Maltese Rose | Not a lot of speed in this contest, and presence of good gate rider Acosta could put this one on the engine |
RACE 5
2. Flat Discount | Confidence boost in last when dropped into nickel company and has prior winning efforts at the level; with plentiful speed up ahead, may get first run on them |
7. Rock Rose | May be speed of the speed but won’t have the front easily; makes second off the bench |
6. Waterloo Rose | Deep closer will be coming late but should have a lot to do |
RACING NOTES
- Last year’s two-year-old champion WV-bred filly, Direct the Cat, returned to action for the first time since November and did so with style. Facing her elders, including last out Fancy Buckles winner Great Spirit, Direct the Cat won a 4 1/2-furlong allowance by six widening lengths in 50.87 seconds. Ridden by Reshawn Latchman for owner-trainer Cynthia McKee, Direct the Cat is 5-for-7 in her career…
- Fellow sophomore What’shername, a half-sister to WV-bred millionaire and graded stakes winner Runnin’toluvya, ran her record to 2-for-2 when she faced older, tackled winners, and stretched out, all for the first time. With Maximo Chilo up for owner-breeder-trainer Leslie Cromer, What’shername won an allowance by 7 1/4 lengths in 1:18.81 for 6 1/2 furlongs…
RACE 6
5. Bodyslam | Late-running sort’s better efforts win here; first off the bench |
3. Run Diem Z | Cutback in distance a big plus in last; speed of the speed? |
4. Landon Jack | Beaten favorite four straight versus similar |
RACE 7
3. Mic’d Up | Impressive debut has produced two next out winners |
4. Irish Wizard | Caught plus group in last when third behind Furreal and Pork Chop Pete; this one’s a bit easier |
5. El Pacho | Third twice versus similar |
RACE 8
4. Park Ave Prince | Limehouse an above average sire with first-timers, and this the first foal out of an unraced mare; zippy work tab includes bullet move from the gate June 1 |
8. Big Boy Ovi | Beaten fave last two, return to one turn a plus |
9. Big Joe B | Has made his own pre-race trouble; a calmer demeanor would aid the cause |
