Jubawithatwist looks formidable in Leavitt

Saturday’s $75,000 Robert G. Leavitt Stakes at Charles Town Races looks likely to continue Jubawithatwist’s reign over the state-bred sophomore division there.

The Juba gelding is 3-5 on the morning line.

Bred in West Virginia by the late John A. Casey and trained by Kristy Petty for her own KP Racing Stables, Jubawithatwist owns seven wins and has never been worse than third in 11 career starts. He arrives at the seven-furlong Leavitt on a three-race win streak, the second of his career.

Last year’s champion West Virginia-bred two-year-old after he ran the table in Charles Town’s baby stakes, he began this year with a pair of runner-up efforts against older runners in allowance contests. Back among his own age group, he narrowly prevailed over the speedy Pork Chop Pete in the 4 ½-furlong Coin Collector.

He’s made two subsequent starts against older allowance foes, winning both by a combined total of nearly 14 lengths. In two- and three-turn races at CT, he owns a spotless 4-for-4 ledger. Regular pilot Gustavo Larrosa will ride.

Jubawithatwist will leave from the three-hole, and his toughest competitors appear to be the horses immediately to his inside.

Right next door is Marshall Peanut, a homebred for trainer Michael Atkins. He’s shown promise going 4 ½ furlongs, winning four of seven starts, but his most recent race, his first around two turns, may have opened some eyes. Under jockey Joseph Schneider, Marshall Peanut, a son of Gandhi, sped to the front and was never threatened en route to a 3 ½-length win. It was his fifth win in eight career starts.

Marshall Peanut is 5-1 on the morning line, and Schneider will again be up.

On the rail is Judgement Day (6-1), who is cross-entered in a Friday allowance in which he is a very lukewarm 7-2 morning line favorite.

Judgement Day is a homebred for trainer Tim Grams and his wife Judy. By Maryland sire Divining Rod, he won his first three starts, all around two turns. But he’s been third and fifth in a pair of three-turn tries, so dialing back to seven furlongs should be a positive for him.

Regular pilot Larry Reynolds is named.

Break the Chains (10-1), You Bet a Fortune (8-1), Soul Catcher (12-1), and Papa Linguine (15-1) round out the field.

The Leavitt is carded as the seventh race on an eight-race program. Post time for the card is 7:00 p.m.
