Colonial Downs adds makeup race day

Colonial Downs has added an extra day of live racing on Wednesday, Sept. 4, serving as a make-up day for the nine-race card lost on Friday, July 12. First post is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET.

Racing was canceled on July 12 due to severe weather and excessive rainfall in the New Kent area.

Live racing on Wednesday Sept. 4 will kick-off a four-day race week to close the 2024 meet, which concludes with New Kent County Virginia Derby Day on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Grade 3 $500,000 New Kent County Virginia Derby headlines a card with $1.3 million in stakes purses including five other turf stakes.

In other news, after two weeks of racing at Colonial Downs, jockey Trevor McCarthy leads the way in the standings with five wins. The 2019 and 2020 title winner stormed to the top last week, recording all five wins over three race days for five different barns. Mychel Sanchez, Horacio Karamanos, Jevian Toledo, and Forest Boyce are tied for second at four wins apiece.

Two of Victor Carrasco’s three wins so far this meet have come in stakes, leading the way for all jockeys in terms of added-money scores. On Saturday, Carrasco took the Punch Line Stakes aboard Determined Kingdom for trainer Phil Schoenthal. Last week, Carrasco piloted Fulmineo victoriously in the Boston Stakes for Arnaud Delacour.

With Horacio Karamanos’ four wins so far this meet, the all-time leading jockey at Colonial Downs now totals 552 local scores.

Trainers Mike Trombetta, Brittany Russell, and Carlos Munoz are knotted at the top of the standings with four wins.
