Picks and analysis for this afternoon’s card from Delaware Park:
- DATE: july 24, 2024, 12:30 p.m. first post
- RACES ON CARD: 8
- CARRYOVERS: None
- POST TIME: 12:30 p.m.
RACE 1
2. Uncle Winchester | Early speed here should come from #1 and #3 and this one might sit right off them for first run; solid debut when winning speed duel but losing war |
5. Mat Matters | Has been facing older horses and should appreciate own-age rivals |
7. Secret Saturday | Didn’t miss by much in latest |
RACE 2
6. Tooshay | Not really bred for turf, but last out try on it versus slightly better than these was really not bad; galloped in maiden-breaker two back on dirt and now back on the main track |
3. Solving Progress | Should be one-two in early running, and though not the horse she was last year, she might have enough here |
4. Amorica | Outran very long odds and running in the wrong condition to be second two back; a repeat puts her in the mix |
RACE 3
1. Golden Cookie | Bred to be any kind — he’s by top win-early sire Violence and a half to mutliple stakes winner Pennybaker — he’s been firing morning bullets for a barn that can win first out |
4. Lou’s Birthday | Good try in latest when a hard-fought second to 3-5 Kerness K |
2. Sacred Thunder | Good debut when second after getting thumped from both directions leaving the gate but gets major step up in class today |

RACE 4
6. Remember Me | Won speed duel in latest but couldn’t contain trip-sitter; might be controlling speed here and only one of these with three wins |
2. Blome | Takes significant drop in class here in search of better form |
1. Ayeartoremember | In the money five of seven at the trip |
RACE 5 – ON THE TURF
2. Liam’s the Great | Credible dirt tries and added ground and shift to the lawn could work to his advantage; dam won seven times on the turf |
3. Crabcakes N Beer | First-timer is a half to Crabs N Beer, who is graded stakes-placed on turf |
7. Soleil Volant | Karakontie an excellent turf sire, and this first-timer’s dam was stakes-placed on the lawn |
5. Quahog Republic | Another debut runner, this one’s sire won his first two starts, including a Grade 1, and his dam went 1-for-2 in her career |
RACING NOTES
- Jockey Gabriel Maldonado now has 36 wins to lead all riders; that’s five more than Jaime Rodriguez, who is in second with 31. Maldonado is winning at a 32% clip…
- With nearly twice as many starters as any other trainer, Jamie Ness is running away in the trainer standings. He has 22 wins, nine more than Juan Arriagada and 10 more than Gary Capuano, who are second and third, respectively.
RACE 6
4. Kiss Me Hardy | Formful sort should sit a good trip off a couple of speeds |
2. Principia | Controlled a slow pace in latest but couldn’t withstand the favorite; has been in the triple five straight |
5. West Side Girl | A lively pace would aid this one’s cause; had an excuse in latest |
RACE 7 – ON THE TURF
1. Double Fireball | Is a long way removed from her better efforts, but, man, they are pretty good; has been outfooted in a pair of sprints this year but should be able to find a better trip going two turns |
4. Downtown Katie | Late-running sort makes third off the bench |
9. Glossamer | Has run a pair of good recent races without finding the winner’s circle; ought to be able to make a good trip |
AE | Both #12 and #13 rate a long look if drawing in off the AE |
RACE 8
3. Annieworkstoomuch | Tired in the final quarter after racing close to the pace in debut; cutback in distance perhaps a plus, and trainer Russell is 4-for-6 with second-time starters making big drops in claiming price |
1. Fia First | Showed good speed in last and runner-up came back to graduate |
5. Verina | Ran well enough in latest; trainer Barboza a strong start to meet |
