MID-ATLANTIC THREE STARS: july 29
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
Region’s Best
FIRST STAR: SCALABLE. The Saturday feature at Monmouth Park was the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks at 1 1/16 miles on dirt. Black-Eyed Susan Stakes winner Gun Song went off as the the 3-2 favorite, and rated three-wide off the pace int he early stages. She briefly led in the stretch, but Scalable, previously 0-for-3 in stakes company, gobbled up ground in the stretch under Paco Lopez and got up to win by three-quarters of a length. It was her third career victory in six starts, and her second win in a row, following a victory against first-level company at Churchill Downs last out. She covered the distance in 1:44.71 for owner Repole Stable and trainer Todd Plecher.
SECOND STAR: DEAN DELIVERS. Dean Delivers earned his third consecutive stakes victory on Sunday at Laurel Park, taking the DeFrancis Dash by three-quarters of a length. The 5-year-old chestnut gelding broke well from the outside post set the pace under Jaime Rodriguez and opened up a clear lead in the stretch. 42-1 longshot Five Dreams closed well late, but the wire came in time for Dean Delivers, who covered six furlongs on a fast dirt track in 1:10.10. He previously won the Mr. Prospector Stakes at Monmouth Park and the Alapocas Run Stakes at Delaware Park earlier this year. The Stonehedge LLC homebred is trained by Ned Allard.
THIRD STAR: FROSTED DEPARTURE. This 4-year-old Kenny McPeek trainee shipped from the Midwest into the Laurel Park winner’s circle on Sunday, taking the Deputed Testamony Stakes by 8 3/4 lengths. The 8-5 second choice set a lonely early lead in the four-horse field, then kicked away in the stretch and drew off as much the best. This is his second stakes win of the season, having previously won the Lake Ouachita Stakes at Oaklawn Park earlier this year. He covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.34 with Horacio Karamanos aboard for owner R.T. Racing Stable.
Laurel Park
- MTROA: Pimlico plan may preserve current track layoutMaryland’s MTROA may jettison its plan to rotate the Pimlico racing strip, saving the historic track and a substantial amount of money.
FIRST STAR: DEAN DELIVERS. Are bigger targets ahead, now that he’s conquered the Mid-Atlantic sprint contingent?
SECOND STAR: FROSTED DEPARTURE. Got a cozy early lead, and the rest is history.
THIRD STAR: SUNNY BREEZE. Came from off the pace to win the Concern Stakes earlier on the Sunday card, giving Ned Allard a stakes double.
Charles Town Races
FIRST STAR: OVERNIGHT POW WOW. The full sister to Late Night Pow Wow and Muad’dib upset stablemate Direct the Cat in Saturday’s Sylvia Bishop Memorial Stakes; both may be Charles Town Oaks-bound for owner/trainer/breeder Cyndy McKee.
SECOND STAR: DEBIT CARD. Rallied from off the pace and got up over favored Al Loves Josie to win a second-level sprint on Friday.
THIRD STAR: JUBASLILBALLERINA. Last year’s WVBC Department of Tourism Stakes winner pressed the pace and drew off to win and allowance route on Friday.
Delaware Park
FIRST STAR: MALIBU BEAUTY. Earned her 10th career victory on Thursday, drawing away to take a Delaware-certified allowance and upset odds-on choice Intrepid Dream in the process.
SECOND STAR: BLAZE ON. Improved to 3-for-3 on the season with a 1 1/4-length victory in a first-level sprint on Thursday.
THIRD STAR: DOCTOR ABBIE. Rallied from last to beat a starter optional claiming field on Wednesday despite losing the whip.
Colonial Downs
FIRST STAR: AMBIVALENT. Rallied wide to nail early leader Remuda and take a third-level grass sprint on Saturday.
SECOND STAR: JUDGE DAVIS. Earned his first victory of 2024 on Saturday, rallying five-wide on the turn and getting up to win a second-level dash on the lawn.
THIRD STAR: LUTE WARM. Picked up her third win in a row on Thursday, winning a second-level grass route going away as much the best.
Monmouth Park
FIRST STAR: SCALABLE. She was one of two 3-year-old stakes winners for Repole and Pletcher on Saturday; they teamed up to win the Jim Dandy with Fierceness later in the day.
SECOND STAR: RECLUSIVE. Closed late to win Friday’s Regret Stakes in a 34-1 upset, giving jockey Chris Elliott his first career stakes victory.
THIRD STAR: DREAMAWAY. This Wesley Ward-trained filly improved to 2-for-2 lifetime on Sunday with a smashing win in the Colleen Stakes.
Parx Racing
FIRST STAR: MYCHEL SANCHEZ. Won four races on the Tuesday card, including a pair for Guadalupe Preciado.
SECOND STAR: ADERO. Rated off the pace and kicked away to win a third-level route on Tuesday.
THIRD STAR: VEESON. Led every step to take a second-level sprint on Monday in an 8-1 upset.
