Book’em Danno holds spot as Top Midlantic-bred

A pair of three-year-olds are – for the moment, at any rate – the top Midlantic-breds. That’s the verdict of the voters in the newest Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred/The Racing Biz Top Midlantic-bred Poll, released August 3.

New Jersey-bred Book’em Danno, whose resume includes a Grade 1 win and two other stakes triumphs this year, was the dominant leader in the latest poll. The Bucchero gelding, a winner of three of four starts this year and six of eight overall, has earned more than $910,000 in his young career, his top victory coming in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens over Belmont weekend.

Book’em Danno is trained by Derek Ryan for Atlantic Six Racing LLC. He could make his next start in the Grade 1 Allen Jerkens at Saratoga, Ryan said.

Book’em Danno’s nearest pursuer is another sophomore. That’s the Maryland-bred Mindframe, who has made only four career starts.

But he certainly has made a splash. In addition to two impressive victories, the Constitution colt has finished second in a pair of Grade 1 events: the Belmont and the Haskell. In both cases, he finished behind Dornoch.

Mindframe is trained by Todd Pletcher for Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable. Mindframe has been taken out of training because of bone bruising and is not expected to resume work until the fall.

The top older horse is another Maryland-bred, Post Time. The four-year-old Frosted colt most recently was second in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at the Spa and is expected to run in Saturday’s Grade 1 Whitney.

Trained by Brittany Russell for Hillwood Stables LLC, Post Time has won three of five starts this year and eight of 11 overall. His victories this year include graded triumphs in the Grade 3 General George and Grade 2 Carter.

The remainder of the top seven includes Grade 2 winner Future Is Now, Grade 3 winner Dontlookbackatall, Grade 2 winner I’m Very Busy, and Grade 3 winner Roses for Debra.

Three of the top seven were bred in Maryland, and three were bred in Pennsylvania. One was bred in New Jersey. Four are males and three are females.

The monthly Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred is the only publication devoted to Thoroughbred breeding and racing in the Mid-Atlantic region. The Racing Biz, an online publication, is the independent voice for mid-Atlantic racing and breeding.

The poll is conducted of media members and others involved in the Thoroughbred industry and restricted to horses that have run in 2024 and were bred in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware, and the Carolinas.
