Picks and analysis for this afternoon’s card from Delaware Park:
- DATE: August 7, 2024, 12:30 p.m. first post
- RACES ON CARD: 8
- CARRYOVERS: None
- POST TIME: 12:30 p.m.
RACE 1
6. Hightime Valentine | Throttled easier in latest and has previously navigated two turns readily; well drawn outside other speed |
2. Murumbi | Couldn’t really close into sluggish pace in latest but may get more congenial setup here |
1. Chloe Rose | Likely to be on the engine from inside draw |
RACE 2
8. Spin the Moon | Showed a bit of speed versus better in two tries on the turf; half-sib Kiss the Girl was a multiple stakes winner on the main track; obviously this is a bit of a shot in the dark, but nobody in this group demands to be used in the top spot |
2. Wicked Kitten | Two recent tries at the level aren’t bad, though better one came going two turns |
6. Orb’s Party Girl | Fires from time to time |
RACE 3 – OFF THE TURF
3. Volatility | Has multiple dirt tries better than her rivals’; likely will have to close into it |
6. Mary’s Boon | First start in over a year for this speedster; trainer Robertson 14% off long layoffs and this one has been training quickly — that bullet half on 7/19 was nearly two seconds (!) faster than the second-fastest move |
4. Reckless Kelly | Best dirt effort came sprinting |

RACE 4
1. Sacred Thunder | Nothing wrong with either of his starts; winner of latest was a Godolphin-bred colt by Violence |
6. Redoubtableripken | Half-brother to multiple stakes winner and Preakness starter Coffeewithchris; barn can win first time out |
7. Staygoldponyboy | Credible debut and gelded in the interim |
RACE 5 – OFF THE TURF
8. Arijana’s Pearl | Didn’t miss by much in latest when Gate Song snuck up the rail to win; could have similar trip today |
12. Gate Song | Led a long way in last before settling for third |
10. La Fantasma | Breeding says dirt should work fine; sire Ghostzapper a Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and dam Special Event won twice on the main track |
RACING NOTES
- Jockeys Dexter Haddock and Ederik Robles each won a pair on Saturday. Robles has 26 wins, good for fourth in the colony, while Haddock is 6-for-13…
- Trainer Bev Strauss notched her first victory of the meet when My Danny Boy ($12.80) won the seventh race under seven-pound bug Felix Astudillo…
- The speedy Maryland-bred Intrepid’s Legacy made it four straight at the meet when he won Saturday’s fourth, a starter/optional claimer. The Imagining gelding is a homebred for Larry Fowler and trained by Gary Capuano…
RACE 6
3. Hey Brother | Speed, speed, and more speed in this contest points you to a runner who’s demonstrated the ability to sit off it and still win; there are question marks, though, so be wary of odds dropping too low |
5. Bold d’Oro | Graduated in latest after a couple of earlier near-misses; lightbulb on? |
6. Talkin Pharoah | Very speedy type in good form now and just missed last out versus Parx allowance foes against another formful sort in Paradise Valley |
RACE 7 – OFF THE TURF
11. Zihuatanejo | Couldn’t go with the runaway winner in latest but held the show spot; pilot Lopez here just for the one mount |
3. Half a League | Blinkers experiment in last didn’t go as planned, so they come off; two back effort contends |
2. Work Hard | Dirt tries are competitive with this group; none of six to run back from latest has finished in the money |
RACE 8
4. Peach Nectar | Two straight wins and show horse from latest won next out |
2. John’s Promise | Has run two good ones since return from lengthy layoff; will sit off the likely pace here |
5. Gran Runner | Faltered versus better but now drops back to appropriate level |
