The Grey Wizard scores in Cape Henlopen

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and The Estate of Albert Frasetto’s The Grey Wizard cruised to an easy victory in the $200,000 Cape Henlopen Stakes at Delaware Park today.

With John Velazquez aboard, the 5-year-old son of Caravaggio, won by 2 ¼ -lengths and returned $4.20 as the favorite in the field of five.  Limited Liability, with Vincent Cheminaud, finished second, and it was another 3 ¾ -lengths farther back to English Conqueror, with Rafael Hernandez, in third.

The Grey Wizard covered the mile and a half over a firm turf course in 2:32.70.  April Fools Andy set a pace of :25.08 for the quarter mile, :52.75 for the half mile and 1:19.70 for the three-quarters mile before fading to fourth.

In his previous outing, The Grey Wizard won the two-mile Grade II Belmont Gold Cup at Saratoga on June 6.  The Cape Henlopen is the second win from four starts this year and the fifth career win from 16 starts with earnings of $693,531 for the Ireland-bred conditioned by H. Graham Motion.

“I knew my horse did not have a lot of speed and he is a little slow coming out of the gate, but they started slowing down the second and then the third quarter so I decided I better start moving to keep him in a good rhythm moving forwardly,” said winning rider John Velazquez.  “By the time we were at the half mile pole, I was right where I wanted to be and I got him moving into a great rhythm.  When we got into the lane, I asked him and he just moved away from them.”
