Parx Racing temporarily off the turf

Parx Racing will be off the turf course for the time being, according to the Paulick Report.

The track most recently was on the turf August 24, according to Equibase charts. The track ran two grass races that day, the $100,000 Parx Dash going five furlongs and a 1 1/16-mile allowance/optional claimer.

In the Parx Dash, longshot Causes Trouble, a five-year-old gelding trained by Harold Wyner for Longball Stables LLC and John Fanelli, fell after suffering an injury about a half-mile from home and was vanned off. He was subsequently euthanized, according to the Paulick Report.

After receiving videos and photographs of the Parx turf course which appear to show holes in the course and other inconsistencies, Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association president Bob Hutt tried to contact Parx Racing management and ultimately reached out to the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA)

“Parx management has informed HISA that they have arranged for Racing Services Testing Laboratory (RSTL) to test and evaluate the turf surface,” Mandy Minger, director of communications for HISA, told the Paulick Report. “Additionally, HISA has requested that members of the Track Advisory Group visit in the coming days to assess the condition of the surface. Parx management has suspended turf racing until further notice.”

Privately many horsemen complain about the condition of the Parx turf course, though this appears to be the first time those complaints have bubbled over into public scrutiny.

Parx moved its two scheduled turf stakes for Pennsylvania-breds to the main track on its August 26 card. It did the same with a pair of races scheduled for the grass on August 27, and the August 28 card did not include any scheduled turf.

The track has no scheduled turf races for its September 2 and September 3 cards. It draws today for September 4.
