Caprice stays perfect in Small Wonder

After winning the Blue Hen Stakes with ease, Runnymoore Racing’s Caprice captured the Delaware bred or certified restricted double with a dominating performance in the $100,250 Small Wonder Stakes at Delaware Park today.

With Jose Batista aboard, the 2-year-old daughter of Golden Lad, won by 3 ¾ lengths and returned $3.20 as the favorite in the field of seven.  The Pennsylvania-bred conditioned by Cathal Lynch battled through early fractions of 23.13 for the quarter mile and :47.11 for the half mile before completing the six furlongs in 1:12.95.  Great Andrei, with Xavier Perez, finished second and it was another 4 ¼ lengths farther back to Beautiful Blome, with Jaime Rodriguez, in third.

Caprice has a career record of three wins from as many starts.  In her first career outing, she broke her maiden by 13 ¾ lengths going five and a half furlongs at Delaware Park on July 20.

“I was paying attention to the time and it was a little slower today, but I am not worried about it just because of the way she does it,” said winning trainer Cathal Lynch.  “She has just done that consistently with all of her races.  She is developing so nicely and she is an improving filly.  They are always dangerous because you do not know where she ends up which is the reason we love this sport.  But she has been perfect for us so far and it is fun being a part of her development.  She will probably get a little break for now and I will talk to the team about where she goes next, but she has a lot of options.”
