Pure Majestic plan comes to fruition in Selima

Man plans, and God laughs, they say. In that regard, horseracing’s a real knee-slapper, as the best laid plans gang aft agley, as Burns styled it.

Which perhaps explains why Gina Robb was so happy in the moments following Pure Majestic’s upset victory in the $150,000 Selima Stakes Saturday at Laurel Park. She and husband Jerry Robb – Pure Majestic’s trainer – had plunked down $100,000 to obtain the now-two-year-old Tapit filly last October, and now they have themselves a stakes winner.

“I’m so happy, because this is what we intended to do, and we did it, and it’s amazing,” Gina Robb said. “From when the gavel went down, this was our plan, and we made it happen.”

The Robbs’ plan in purchasing the filly, who is a half-sister to the multiple graded stakes winner Tonalist’s Shape, was to win some races with her and then retire her to broodmare duties, thus upgrading their productive breeding program.

Now, with a blacktype win on her resume, you can consider it mission accomplished. And she’s just two.

Her career didn’t start out all that auspiciously, as she was a disappointing fourth as the favorite in her first time out and then ran second or third in three consecutive dirt races. Switched to the turf, she ran second at Colonial Downs and then graduated there, both turf races coming at one mile.

The Selima was scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the turf, but with Laurel off the turf today, it became a one-mile dirt affair. Though the betting public shied away – she went off at nearly 8-1 – Jerry Robb was not discouraged, thinking the added distance in the turf races had benefited her as much as or more than the surface switch.

After scratches, Pure Majestic’s rivals all were coming off shorter races than her two one-mile outings, so Robb figured his horse would be sitting third or fourth in the early running, a couple of lengths off it.

Instead, she was in front.

“We just played by the break,” said winning rider Jevian Toledo, aboard for the third consecutive outing. “Wherever she puts you, just take it from there. She broke like a rocket out of there, picked up the bridle right away.”

Pure Majestic threw down honest fractions, reeling off a half-mile in a sharp 46.73 seconds and three quarters in 1:12.61. But she was doing it by herself – two lengths clear after a half, 2 ½ after three quarters – and well within herself.

“When they gave him that easy lead – I didn’t see how fast they were going, but he [Toledo] was just sitting there,” Jerry Robb said. “I knew when they came to her, she would have something left.”

My Charm chased willingly and was able to shave a bit off the margin in the lane but had to settle for second. Post time favorite Sail Theseven Seas (5-2) mounted a middle move but ultimately finished third. Running time for the one-turn mile over a muddy sealed track was 1:40.50.

Pure Majestic paid $17.40 to win and topped an exacta that returned $34.20 for a one-dollar wager. It was her second win from seven career outings and pushed her bankroll to nearly $160,000.

Robb said he had not made plans beyond this race. “One race at a time,” he said.

“She’s a nice filly,” Toledo said. “She can do grass and dirt, so that’s really good, both surfaces.”
