Caprice appears formidable in White Clay Creek

Right from the jump, Caprice has been the dominant two-year-old filly on the grounds at Delaware Park. She figures likely to solidify her standing in Wednesday’s $125,000 White Clay Creek Stakes.

The White Clay Creek and the Rocky Run, for two-year-olds, conclude Delaware’s stakes schedule for 2024. The meet itself ends October 17.

Caprice, a homebred for Greg and Caroline Bentley’s Runnymoore Racing trained by Cal Lynch, got out of the gates in a hurry and hasn’t looked back. She won her debut July 20, pressing a very fast pace and drawing away to win by 13 ¾ lengths in the 5 ½-furlong test. Flattering that result: runner-up Pure Majestic recently won the Selima Stakes at Laurel Park.

She followed that up by sweeping a pair of Delaware certified events. Caprice won the $50,000 Blue Hen by 2 ½ lengths and then the $100,000 Small Wonder by 3 ¾.

“I will talk to the team about where she goes next, but she has a lot of options,” Lynch said after the Small Wonder.

Indeed. By Golden Lad, Caprice also is eligible to run in the Maryland Million and would have been a strong favorite in the six-furlong, $100,000 Lassie; Onyx Ten, whom Caprice beat by 2 ½ lengths in the Blue Hen and 10 in the Small Wonder, is the 9-2 morning line favorite in the Lassie.

The one question facing Caprice – and it’s one facing all of her rivals, as well – is how she’ll navigate the two-turn distance in what will be her first route try. While one never knows until they do it, certainly she runs as if there’s more in the tank – she’s been pulling away at the finish in all of her races – and her breeding suggests it should not be an issue.

Golden Lad’s offspring have done better at route distances than sprint distances. On the bottom side, she’s out of the winning Street Cry mare Grand Folly. Grand Folly’s only career win came at one mile on the turf. Caprice has one winning sibling, and that one, Dizzy Kitty, registered her only win to date at a mile and 70 yards on the synthetic at Presque Isle Downs.

Caprice is 3-2 on the morning line. Leading rider Jaime Rodriguez will be up, and the duo will leave from post number three.

Tri-Star Racing LLC and Boston Baylor Properties’ Piggy Tales Up is the 7-2 second choice on the morning line. The Dan Ward trainee won at first asking July 27 at Monmouth Park but has not raced since. The Mitole filly, trained by Dan Ward, will carry Daniel Centeno.

Synergism (9-2) won going 7 ½ furlongs to break her maiden, the longest distance at which any of the contenders have won. That win, however, came on the turf; she ran sixth in her lone dirt try going five furlongs over the strip. The John Servis trainee will have Kendrick Carmouche aboard.

The White Clay Creek is the seventh race on a nine-race program.
