Delaware Park meet to conclude Thursday with 10-race card

Troy Johnson, Charles Lo and Jagger’s Spikezone, who will be seeking his ninth victory this year and his fourth of the meet, highlights the ten-race live racing season closing day card at Delaware Park Thursday. First race post time is 12:30 p.m.

Spikezone is tied for second in the nation by wins. He is two behind national leader Tennessee Moon, a Mark Hibdon trainee who is 10-for-14 this year while racing at tracks like Delta Downs, Fonner Park, and Energy Downs.

Spikezone has been installed as the 4-to-5 morning-line favorite in the eighth race, a five and half furlong starter optional claiming race with an approximate post time of 4:00 p.m. Spikezone has won his last three outings, all at Delaware Park, by a combined margin of 14-lengths. This year, the 5-year-old son of Speightster has won eight of his 11 starts and he sports a career record of 11 wins from 22 starts with earnings $375,822.

Spikezone, trained by Jamie Ness, is 3-for-4 at the Delaware Park meet. With a win, he would tie Doin’ittherightway, Intrepid’s Legacy, Paper Mansion, and Tweet Away Robin for the meet lead with four wins. Of that group, only Paper Mansion is a perfect 4-for-4 at the meet.

Spikezone’s trainer, Jamie Ness, has secured his record-setting 12th overall training title. The native of Huron, South Dakota is surpassing the legendary Hall of Fame trainer Grover “Buddy” Delp, who notched 11 Delaware Park titles over a two-decade period beginning in 1963. Ness, who has never been worse than third in the standings since his first season stabled at Delaware Park in 2011, will also secure his record tenth consecutive title. With two days remaining in the season, he has 30-win lead with a record of 56 winners from 190 starters.

Jaime Rodriguez has locked up his fourth consecutive leading jockey title. He has a 22-win lead with a record of 81 winners from 261 mounts.

Juan Arriagada will record his first leading owner title. Arriagada, who will also finish second in the trainer standings, has a record of 17 wins from 67 starters as an owner.
