CT Notes: Zip Start upends Casey Memorial
Fillies were the stars in Charles Town’s top races Saturday night (see video above).
In the feature, the $75,000 James and Eleanor Casey Memorial Stakes for state-bred juvenile fillies, Zip Start rallied from mid-pack to pull away late for a 3-length win under jockey Arnaldo Bocachica.
With the win, Zip Start turned the tables on three runners who had finished ahead of her in last month’s West Virginia Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders Classic, including Diakonissa, the winner of that event who went off the even-money favorite here and settled for second after leading for much of the way.
The win was Zip Start’s second from four career outings and gave her nearly $70,000 in earnings. She is trained by Jeff Runco for himself and co-owner David Raim.
Zip Start, a daughter of Upstart, was bred in West Virginia by Williams Racing Corporation.
One race prior, Direct the Cat reconfirmed that she is all the way back.
Bridge jumpers may have had an anxious moment when she was away from the gate awkwardly and briefly hemmed in in a state-bred open allowance for older fillies and mares. But they need not have worried.
The 3-year-old Redirect filly dominated the contest by over four lengths for her eighth win in 11 career starts and fourth in five this season.
Direct the Cat had mounted an impressive six-race win streak prior to a stunning second-place finish – at 1-to-9 odds – to stablemate Overnight Pow Wow in the Sylvia Bishop Memorial Stakes. After getting a couple of months off, Direct the Cat returned to win the WV Lottery Breeders Classic last month before her easy win Saturday under regular pilot Reshawn Latchman. Running time for the seven furlongs was 1:26.10.
Direct the Cat paid $2.20 as the 1-9 favorite. Early leader Maggie’s Girl finished second. Direct the Cat was bred by the late John McKee and is trained by his widow Cynthia McKee for her own Beau Ridge Farm
