Foxy Junior takes third straight in Thirty Eight Go Go
Dianne Stern’s homebred Foxy Junior continued what has been an incredible 4-year-old year Saturday by winning the $100,000 Thirty Eight Go Go.
A 4-year-old Pennsylvania-bred filly conditioned by Bernard Houghton, Foxy Junior earned her third consecutive victory and sixth win in seven starts this year. It was her third consecutive stakes victory.
Foxy Junior was rated in second by jockey Jomar Torres as Malibu Beauty set fractions of 23.74 seconds for the opening quarter and 47:51 for the half. But approaching the far turn, Foxy Junior started moving on the pacesetter and took the lead for good approaching the eighth pole.
“She was sharp. She came into this race really good,” Houghton said. “I was very confident at the three-eighths pole.”
Foxy Junior went on to defeat Malibu Beauty by 2 ¾ lengths. It was another three back to show horse Kissedbyanangel. Running time for 1 1/16 miles on a fast main track was 1:44.18.
Foxy Junior paid $5.20 to win as the 8-5 post time favorite. With the second choice finishing second, the exacta returned $10.10 for a one-dollar wager.
Foxy Junior’s three-race win streak began in the Plum Pretty Sept. 21 at Parx Racing and continued in last month’s Maryland Million Distaff. Overall, she has won nine of 19 starts, five of eight at the distance, and has amassed $332,669.
In a pair of two-year-old stakes, Sacred Thunder earned his first stakes win, while Caprice registered her third.
John Hazard’s Sacred Thunder moved three-wide around the turn under jockey Jevian Toledo and then drove home to victory Saturday in the $100,000 James F. Lewis III at Laurel Park.
Trained by Gary Capuano, Sacred Thunder covered six furlongs in 1:10.45 and finished a length in front of a closing Re Markably. Saxton was third.
Sacred Thunder, now 3-for-7 in his career, had finished third behind Do It for Michael and Re Markably in last month’s Maryland Million Nursery. But he turned the tables on both of those rivals Saturday, with Nursery winner Do It for Michael, off as the 6-5 favorite, fading to fourth after leading early. Re Markably has finished second in each of his last two.
Runnymoore Racing, LLC’s homebred Caprice took a test drive over the Laurel track Saturday and liked what she saw, winning the $100,000 Smart Halo by a half length over Great Andrei.
Caprice, trained by Cathal Lynch and ridden by Jamie Rodriguez, had started her previous four races at Delaware Park, winning her first three before finishing a distant second in the White Clay Creek Stakes Oct. 9. With Lynch and Runnymoore looking toward the winter stakes schedule at Laurel, Caprice was entered in the Smart Halo to see if she liked the track. The result was a victory.
Great Andrei was three parts of a length ahead of show horse Beyond Belief. Daze, off as the 6-5 favorite after two flashy, career-starting victories, led early but faded to fifth.
Caprice is now 4-for-5 in her career, with earnings of $211,250.
