Laurel Park cancels all weekend racing
The jockeys’ concerns and track issues which spiked Laurel Park’s Friday card have led the track to cancel racing all weekend. Laurel will not race on either Saturday or Sunday, Nov. 23 and 24.
The track announced the cancellations in a mid-afternoon message to horsemen.
Laurel’s nine-race program on Nov. 23 featured three stakes for older horses: the Willa On the Move for fillies and mares and the Dave’s Friend and Richard W. Small for three and up. Those races are being brought back as extras for the Friday, Nov. 29 card, which is to be drawn Nov. 23.
In fact, all but two of the 26 races on this weekend’s canceled cards have been put up as extras for next weekend’s cards, according to messages to horsemen. The track will hold normal training hours, but there will be no breezing, only galloping and jogging.
The upcoming racing weekend also features Thanksgiving day racing on Nov. 28 and two stakes on Nov. 30. Those are the Safely Kept for three-year-old fillies and the City of Laurel for three-year-olds.
