Harness community rallies behind Pete Medhurst

The Maryland harness racing community is pulling together to support a stricken member.

Pete Medhurst, the longtime track announcer at Rosecroft Raceway, is battling brain cancer and faces a challenging road back to the microphone.

Medhurst is a familiar voice to many in Maryland. In addition to his duties at Rosecroft, he also is the voice of U. S. Naval Academy athletics, including Navy football and basketball, and has been a regular voice on area radio stations, including Baltimore’s WBAL and 106.7 The Fan-DC.

He also filled in at Laurel Park some years back when regular announcer Dave Rodman was away.

Now, with Medhurst and his family facing a tough road, his harness compatriots are working to support them.

Here are two ways you can pitch in:

  • Harness folks have created a “Pete Strong” t-shirt, which costs $40, with 100% of sales going “directly to Pete as he continues to fight his battle.” It is available in sizes small to XXL.
  • There is also a “Trees for Pete” fundraiser taking place December 22 at the Marydel Volunteer Fire Company in Marydel, MD. Tickets are $80 per person for this “sea glass tree and auction fundraiser.” Click the link to learn more.
