Great Notion’s big year tops Midlantic sires

Northview Stallion Station sires Great Notion and Golden Lad ended 2024 as the Mid-Atlantic region’s leading general sire and juvenile sire, respectively, while both hit career milestones.

For the first time in his 17-year stud career, Great Notion surpassed $6 million in progeny earnings in one year. The only other Maryland stallion to hit that mark was Northview’s legendary Not For Love in 2008 and 2009.

Great Notion had 76 winners from 128 starters in 2024, and total earnings of $6,086,941, for an average per runner of $47,554. He led the region by number of stakes winners with eight, topped by graded winners Coastal Mission and Future Is Now.

It was Great Notion’s seventh consecutive year as Maryland’s general sires list leader. He also led all Mid-Atlantic sires in 2024, easily outpacing Maryland newcomer Cupid and Pennsylvania stallion Cloud Computing for the top spot.

Golden Lad emerged from a hot battle for the title of the region’s top 2-year-old sire when his daughter Caprice (above) earned $60,000 on Dec. 28 with her Gin Talking Stakes score. It was her third consecutive $100,000 Laurel stakes win, and her second in the month of December. With $331,250 earned during a 6-for-7 season, Caprice accounted for more than half of Golden Lad’s $601,198 in progeny earnings.

It was the second consecutive year (among sires with Maryland-sired crops) that Golden Lad finished atop Maryland’s juvenile sires list and third time in six years. The last to take the title in consecutive years was Not For Love in 2012 and 2013
