What they said: Quotes from Laurel Park stakes winners
Laurel Park hosted four stakes on Jan. 18, two for Maryland-restricted runners and two for open.
Winners were Call Another Play (Geisha), Quint’s Brew (Jennings), Ms. Bucchero (What A Summer), and Prince of Jericho (Fire Plug). Here’s some of what the winning connections had to say.
That’s why they race, right? I don’t know about the [speed figures]. I know the best race she ran, she was beaten two lengths by the horse that won the Alabama. Is there an Alabama winner in here?”
— Call Another Play‘s owner-breeder R. Larry Johnson
“She’s why you wake up seven days a week, 365, days a year, at four o’clock in the morning. Me and [trainer Diane Morici] were talking about it the other day. She is exactly why we do this. She’s the horse that dreams are made of.
— Colton Moore, assistant to Ms. Bucchero’s trainer Diane Morici
I believe he’s gonna improve more. He’s still a young horse.
Jockey Mychel Sanchez, on Quint’s Brew
For a horse that’s had as long a layoff as he’s had, I thought that was pretty awesome.
— Quint’s Brew’s trainer Ned Allard
He’s just a really good, classy horse. But I have to pay a little bit of credit to [co-owner] Mike Dubb for letting us kind of do what we need to do. He gets time between his races, and we’ve given him a couple of breaks along the way, and it’s benefited him.
— Trainer Brittany Russell, on Prince of Jericho
She doesn’t want to be told what to do. I popped her out of there and dropped her head. You can see on the backside I have a loop on the rein. She was relaxed. When I tightened up my reins at the quarter pole and asked her to go, she gave me everything she had.
— Jockey Xavier Perez, on Ms. Bucchero
That was a pleasant surprise. After her last race, we were considering retiring her, but then we wanted to try her one more time, which was today. She may have run herself into running for another season.
— Tana Aubrey, assistant trainer to Call Another Play’s trainer Michael Trombetta
This time she was at her distance: six furlongs. We knew we had the tough New York company, but we know what horse we have. She comes out here every single time, and she tries her hardest.
— Colton Moore, on Ms. Bucchero
Nice way to start, especially here at Laurel Park at the beginning of the year. So let’s keep it rolling!
— Jockey Mychel Sanchez, who won stakes aboard Quint’s Brew and Call Another Play
