Remembering Pete Medhurst

I’ve known Pete Medhurst for 30 years as a friend and colleague. To me, he will always be more than simply the track announcer at Rosecroft Raceway and play-by-play announcer for Navy football on WNAV.

Pete was a true professional in every sense of the word, and he was a man of great character and selflessness. That was the first thing you noticed: he always put his wife and kids above everything else.

Whether we spoke at the track or in the press box at Bowie Baysox games, he was always welcoming and engaging. He almost never spoke critically or harshly of anyone, personally or professionally.

I also had the chance to see Pete in action from a different perspective. As a reporter, I covered several events where he was a basketball referee or home plate umpire. He never wavered from calling the games fairly, and he was quick to field any questions from coaches about a particular call.

He was a hard worker with numerous talents. He always looked forward to each task and performed his jobs admirably while always maintaining a personal integrity that matched his work ethic.

Rest In Peace, Pete. Your presence will be sorely missed by many fans, friends, family members and colleagues.
