Initiative launched to protect live racing in Florida, elsewhere

The Thoroughbred Racing Initiative (TRI), a new industry collaboration, announced its launch Feb. 18 to support live horse racing and combat legislation that threatens the sport’s future. Led by industry leaders David O’Farrell, Jon Green, Mark Casse, and Dr. Barry Eisaman, TRI aims to unify stakeholders in opposing efforts that could weaken racing and breeding.

The project grows out of the recent news that 1/ST Racing, owner of Gulfstream Park, was supporting “decoupling” in Florida, that is, severing the connection between live racing and slot machine and casino gaming. Advocates fear that without a statutory requirement linking live racing and casino licenses, track operators will abandon racing.

Characterizing the sport as “under attack,” TRI President O’Farrell added, “We must take a stand now to ensure Thoroughbred racing has a future.”

Though the immediate concern is the industry in Florida, O’Farrell noted that the group “could get involved in other states where live racing is under siege. Thoroughbred racing and breeding throughout North America is an ecosystem. While Florida is a linchpin, we need the other jurisdictions of all sizes for the industry to prosper.”

TRI will work with key organizations, including the National Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association (NHBPA), to advocate for policies that sustain the industry’s economic and cultural impact. Supporters can learn more at thoroughbredracinginitiative.com.
