Jockey Jaime Rodriguez has opened a long lead in the Laurel Park standings by wins, while on the trainer side, Brittany Russell and Jamie Ness are continuing their duel from last year.

With 19 wins, Rodriguez has nearly doubled his nearest pursuers, JG Torrealba and Sheldon Russell, with 10 wins apiece. They’re the only three in double-figures thus far. Among trainers, Russell and Ness are tied with 12 wins each.

Despite a reputation suggesting she’s more of a turf rider, Forest Boyce is having a productive winter, with seven wins from 20 starts, a 35% strike rate, and the lead in percentage of purse earned; 70% of her mounts have finished in the money… Interesting to see Xavier Perez, with a modest strike rate to date (4-for-38, 10.5%) in the top 10 for percent of purse earned; of his four wins, two have come in allowance company, and one came in a $100,000 stake…

Boyce has an impressive 3.73 wins above expectations — that is, comparing the rider’s actual number of wins to what the odds of their mounts would have predicted… With just one win from 18 starts, it may seem odd to find Sara Del Fabbro having a positive wins above expectations figure; what it tells you is that she’s been on a steady stream of longshots. Other than her one winner, every other mount she’s had has been at least 10-1…

The list includes 11, since four trainers have five three apiece… Brittany Russell and Jamie Ness are tied atop the standings through the first month… Russell’s 35% strike rate is exceptional, but it’s also merely a continuation of what she was doing in the fall, when she won with 36% of her local starters en route to the meet title…

The percentage of purse earned list is heavy on trainers with relatively few starters (seven is the cutoff to be included), so this list may well look different as more trainers accrue more starters… Henry Walters has made good use of his one win to date: it came in a stake with Barbadian Runner…

Hugh McMahon, off to a solid start (19% strike rate), leads in wins above expectations with 2.75 — meaning he’s won nearly three more races than the odds of his horses would project… Despite a 35% win rate, Brittany Russell has only 0.63 wins above expectation. That tells you the bettors are on her horses; in fact, more than half of her starters have gone off at odds of less than 2-1…
