Documentary focuses on improbable Smarty Jones journey
Pennsylvania-bred Smarty Jones, who captivated fans during his 2004 Triple Crown bid, is the focus of a new documentary, Ride of a Lifetime: The Smarty Jones Story. Following his nomination as a finalist for the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame, the 37-minute film is now available to stream for free at www.thesmartyjonesstory.com.
Produced to mark the 20th anniversary of his legendary run, the documentary highlights Smarty’s journey from overcoming a career-threatening injury to winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Featuring interviews with owner Pat Chapman, trainer John Servis, and jockey Stewart Elliott, it recounts the chestnut colt’s rise from Philadelphia Park (now Parx Racing) to national fame.

“Smarty brought so much joy to me, my husband, and fans around the world,” said Chapman, adding, “He truly took us on the ‘Ride of a Lifetime.’.”
Funded by the Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (PTHA), the film was produced by The WorkShop Content Studios and FreshFly. Discussions are underway for wider streaming availability.
Now 24, Smarty Jones continues to stand at stud in Pennsylvania. His Preakness victory margin remains the largest in the race’s 149-year history. Hall of Fame induction results will be announced April 24, with the ceremony set for August 1 in Saratoga Springs, NY.
