Safe Trust looks to turn tables in Beyond the Wire
The road to the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes continues this Saturday at Laurel Park with the $100,000 Beyond the Wire Stakes, a one-mile test for three-year-old fillies. One of the key contenders in the field is Barak Farm’s Safe Trust, a Maryland-bred daughter of Mosler, who looks to take another step forward in her promising career.
Trained by Jose Corrales, Safe Trust has been a model of consistency, finishing in the money in eight of her nine career starts, including two victories. She has accumulated $140,525 in earnings and boasts four stakes placings. She finished second after leading much of the way in the Wide Country Feb. 22, and prior to that she had won a six-furlong allowance/optional claimer by almost two lengths.
Corrales admitted that early returns were not as promising as things have turned out.

“She was very crazy early on,” Corrales said. “It was hard to break her and everything like that, but we got lucky. We have some good people who work with us, and the horse has improved.”
Corrales also noted “a little hesitation” at the starting gate recently, but the team has been schooling her and believes she is progressing well. Saturday’s race will mark Safe Trust’s first try around two turns, and her trainer hopes she can settle off the pace.
“If she can rate, and one or two horses can go in front, I would prefer it like that,” Corrales said. “It’s hard to decide with her because she’s a fighter. [Sometimes] she goes to the front, and she just runs. She tries hard in every race.”
Safe Trust will have regular rider Denis Araujo aboard as she takes on a competitive field. Among her challengers is Onyx Ten, who has won back-to-back stakes races, including a one-length victory over Safe Trust last time out in the Wide Country. Also in the mix is Burner Account, a runaway winner of the Main Line Stakes at Parx Racing last out, and Beautiful Blome, who won the White Clay Creek Stakes at Delaware Park and finished second to Burner Account in her last start.
The Beyond the Wire Stakes is the seventh race on a nine-race card, sharing top billing with the Private Terms Stakes for three-year-olds.
Next month will bring the Weber City Miss, a “win and in” for the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes.
