What to watch at Charles Town this weekend
An exciting weekend of Thoroughbred racing is on tap at Charles Town Races, with a mix of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers scheduled to hit the track.
Here’s what we’re watching:
Headlining Saturday’s card is Duncan Idaho, a dominant one-turn force trained by Jeff Runco and ridden by Arnaldo Bocachica. The 5-year-old horse, owned by David Raim, boasts an impressive record of 12 wins in 19 starts and over $285,000 in earnings. A local fan favorite, Duncan Idaho looks to run his record to 3-for-3 in 2025.
Friday brings the local bow of Wrightsville in a maiden event. Trained by Claudio Gonzalez and piloted by Raul Mena, the lightly raced four-year-old has finished second once in two starts. He was once a $610,000 yearling a half-brother to the graded stakes winner Durante. He is the 3-1 morning line favorite in Friday’s second race.
Also racing Friday is Connect the Dots, a half-brother to a the top local sprinter Dr. Feelgood. Trained by Anthony Farrior and ridden by Bocachica, this colt seeks his breakthrough victory after placing second once in three starts. Owned by breeder Jill Daniel, he is 8-5 on the morning line in Friday’s fourth.
Little Maggie, a filly trained by Tim Grams for his and his wife Judy’s Grams Racing Stable, is another to watch. A winner of two races from three starts and earner of over $33,000, she’s entered in an allowance event that’s the fifth race on March 27. With Larry Reynolds aboard, she’s 5-2 on the morning line.
Rounding out the weekend contenders is Lightnin Runner, trained by Ronney Brown and owned by George Nyren. This consistent mare has nine wins and three seconds from 19 starts, with earnings exceeding $257,000. She’ll run in a March 27 allowance race in her first start since last July and is the 6-5 morning line favorite. She’ll have to contend with the hard-hitting Jeff Runco trainee Barbers Point, who is 8-5.
First post is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
