Derby trail: Tappan Street, Sandman punch tickets
The Road to the Kentucky Derby took a dramatic turn Saturday with standout performances in two key prep races: the $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park and the $1.5 million Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park.
At Gulfstream, Tappan Street, owned by WinStar Farm LLC, CHC Inc., and Cold Press Racing, delivered a powerful 1 ¼-length victory in the 74th running of the Florida Derby. With Luis Saez aboard, the son of Into Mischief tracked a swift early pace before surging past rivals in the stretch to earn his first stakes win. Trained by Brad Cox, Tappan Street secured 100 qualifying points toward the May 3 Kentucky Derby, locking in his spot among the top contenders.
The win followed a second-place effort in the Holy Bull (G3) and marked a key step forward after skipping the Fountain of Youth (G2). Sovereignty, the 8-5 favorite and Fountain of Youth winner, rallied for second, with Neoequos finishing third.
At Oaklawn Park, Sandman stormed from well off the pace to capture the $1.5 million Arkansas Derby by 2 ½ lengths under Jose Ortiz. Trained by Mark Casse for a partnership including D. J. Stable, St. Elias Stable, West Point Thoroughbreds, and CJ Stables, the gray son of Tapit capitalized on a blistering early pace to seize control in the stretch and power home in 1:50.08.
Sandman, who had previously hit the board in both the Southwest (G3) and Rebel Stakes (G2), earned 100 Kentucky Derby qualifying points with the win—his third from eight starts—and boosted his earnings to over $1.25 million. Rebel winner Coal Battle finished third, while post time favorite Cornucopian, making just his second start, was cooked in the early pace duel and faded to fourth.
With both the Florida Derby and Arkansas Derby offering maximum Derby points (100-50-25-15-10), Tappan Street and Sandman now stand poised for a run at glory on the first Saturday in May.
