Laurel: Debut wins for Agreed, Weekend Wife

The wet and sealed track at Laurel Park didn’t stop two newcomers from making big first impressions on Friday afternoon. Making, you might even say, a splash.

Both Agreed, a blue-blooded three-year-old colt, and Weekend Wife, a determined four-year-old filly, delivered winning performances in their respective debut starts.

In a maiden special weight event, Agreed lived up to his pedigree with a professional score. A son of leading sire Uncle Mo and out of Bambalina, Agreed’s maternal granddam is Perfect Sting, the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner.

Despite breaking slowly and encountering early trouble, Agreed showed grit and poise under jockey Sheldon Russell. Saving ground along the rail, he found room in the stretch and surged past rivals to win by 2¾ lengths, clocking 1:13.30 for six furlongs over the sloppy going.

Trained by Brittany Russell and owned by breeder Repole Stable, Agreed went off as the 1.30-1 favorite and didn’t disappoint, showing a professional turn of foot that hints at greater things to come. His sharp rally in mid-stretch and decisive finish confirmed his high potential on a day when conditions were far from ideal.

“When you watched all these guys getting saddled in this race, he’s walking around here with his head down like a pony,” Brittany Russell said. “Super quiet, and the rest of them are jumping around, acting funny. You love to see that. He was quiet, classy, and he ran.”

Later in the card, Weekend Wife registered a confident debut in a waiver maiden claiming race. The four-year-old daughter of Blofeld is trained by Maryland-based horseman Tim Keefe. Bred by Mr. and Mrs. Charles McGinnes and owned by Richie Blue, Weekend Wife saved ground throughout under Forest Boyce and powered home to a 2¾-length victory.

Weekend Wife is a Maryland-bred half-sister to Passion Rules, a Friesan Fire colt who recently ran third in the Wood Memorial for trainer Brad Cox and owner Calumet Farm.
