Speedyness, Film Star square off in Native Dancer

A field of seasoned campaigners and emerging local stars is set to go postward in Saturday’s $100,000 Native Dancer Stakes at Laurel Park. The 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds and up is the fifth on a nine-race card.

Headlining the entries is Speedyness, a 4-year-old gelding trained by Jamie Ness who recently finished third in the Not for Love Stakes and is the 7-5 morning line favorite. A consistent Maryland-bred, Speedyness won the John B. Campbell Stakes two starts ago and enters this race with 7 wins and nearly $400,000 in career earnings from 18 starts.

Film Star, trained by Linda Rice, is another top contender. The 6-year-old son of Flatter is 3-2 on the morning line and has earned over $590,000 in his career. He edged Speedyness in the Robert T. Manfuso Stakes in December and finished third in an open allowance in January. Jose Lezcano is named.

If the top two falter, the most likely beneficiary is Cataleya Strike (7-2), a 4-year-old trained by Rudy Sanchez-Salomon. A steadily improving son of Catalina Cruiser, Cataleya Strike won an allowance last out and has notched 4 wins from 16 starts. Jevian Toledo will ride.

Curlin’s Malibu, trained by William Atkins, is looking to break through at the stakes level. The 6-year-old gelding has a steady record and was most recently second in an allowance/optional claiming race. A win on Saturday would mark a career milestone for both horse and jockey Tais Lyapustina, who is seeking her first stakes victory.

Veteran gelding Armando R brings the most experience to the field, with 47 career starts and over $540,000 in earnings. He won the Richard Small Stakes back in 2022 and remains a hard-knocking presence for trainer Damon Dilodovico, though recent finishes suggest he’ll need to step up to contend here.

Feeling Woozy, trained by Hamilton Smith, is another Maryland-bred with upside. The 5-year-old was sixth in the Not for Love Stakes last out and is still searching for his first stakes victory. With 4 wins and 14 in-the-money finishes from 28 starts, he brings reliability and local flavor to the race. He is 8-1 on the morning line and will have JG Torrealba up.

Post time for the card, which also features three other stakes, is 12:10 p.m.
