What to watch at Charles Town this week

Having lost nearly two full days of racing to the weather a couple of weeks back, Charles Town will race a four-day week this week. Action kicks off Wednesday night and runs through Saturday, with a first race post time of 7:00 p.m. nightly.

Here’s what we’ll be watching:

Wednesday, April 23

Race 5 – Coastal Cruise
All eyes will be on Coastal Cruise, a well-bred colt making his second career start. This gray/roan 4-year-old is a half-brother to millionaire Coastal Mission and $500k earner Lewisfield, both standouts in the Mid-Atlantic region. Though he showed little in his debut, his connections – jockey Arnaldo Bocachica and trainer Jeff Runco – are among the best at Charles Town. He’ll look to improve in this maiden special weight event, going off at 7-2 on the morning line.

Thursday, April 24

Race 2 – Our Street Angel
Our Street Angel returns after a solid victory in her first two-turn attempt. The chestnut 3-year-old filly is lightly raced but improving, and she has a unique backstory: she was named via a contest organized by the West Virginia Breeders Classics. With Larry Reynolds aboard for Tim Grams, she’ll try to make it two in a row in this 6 ½-furlong allowance.

Race 7 – Buckin’ Dreamer
A horse that’s been making the rounds, Buckin’ Dreamer makes his first start for trainer Timothy Shanley after being claimed for $15,000 – the third time he’s changed hands in five months. The 4-year-old gelding brings steady form into this allowance/optional claimer at 1 1/16 miles, having beaten similar last out. Key rivals from that win are back, including Wish for Peace, the 8-5 favorite who ran third that day. Orlando Bocachica keeps the mount as Buckin’ Dreamer tries to build momentum at 7-2 odds.

Friday, April 25

Race 4 – Somethingwonderful
After easily winning her local debut, Somethingwonderful steps up in an allowance at 7 furlongs. She’s still lightly raced, with only three starts, and has some upside for trainer Anthony Aguirre. With Jose Betancourt in the irons, she’s one to watch as she looks to keep that momentum going.

Race 7 – Runaldo
Returning for his 2025 debut is the talented Runaldo, who took the Sam Huff WV Breeders Classic in style in November. The gray/roan gelding owned by Huntertown Farm will need some luck, though – he’s currently on the also-eligible list and must draw into this 6 ½-furlong allowance. If he does, his back class and connections (Arnaldo Bocachica and Jeff Runco) make him a major player.

Race 8 – Mor d’Oro
Closing out the night is the debut of Mor d’Oro, a three-year-old colt with some pedigree – he’s a half-brother to No More Time, the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes winner at Tampa Bay in 2024. Trained by Keith Brown and ridden by Christian Maldonado, he’ll tackle this maiden special weight in his career debut.
