Crabs N Beer gets nod as People’s Voice Midlantic-bred
The people have spoken, and the result is, well, a bit surprising. Score one for catchy names.
In a field that included graded stakes winners and millionaires, the People’s Voice Top Midlantic-bred of 2024 is Crabs N Beer, the horse with the most Maryland of names.
Crabs N Beer garnered 32.2% of the votes cast, outpacing Jaxon Traveler (21%), Post Time (20.2%), and Dontlookbackatall (13.7%) for the top spot. No other horse pulled in more than 3% of the votes cast.
On Wednesday, Post Time was announced as the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred/The Racing Biz Top Midlantic-bred of 2024. This year marks the first time that the public has been offered a chance to vote on their favorites.
Crabs N Beer, trained during the year by both Keri Brion and Chuck Lawrence, finished the season with a win, a second, and two thirds from eight starts, earning $151,717. He recorded his best result in May when he finished second in the Grade 3 Dinner Party Stakes at odds of 14-1. That followed an allowance win to kick off the season.
Crabs N Beer, a five-year-old during the 2024 season, is a Maryland-bred Blofeld gelding out of the winning Kitalpha mare Get’m Up Pronto. Bred by Kyle Horlacher, he is owned by Charles Blanford.
For his career, Crabs N Beer has recorded five wins and nearly $400,000 in earnings. He has been stakes-placed six times, including the Dinner Party and the 2024 Maryland Million Turf.
With the vote, Crabs N Beer bested millionaires Jaxon Traveler and Post Time.
Jaxon Traveler, trained by Steve Asmussen for West Point Thoroughbreds, earned seven-figure status with a win in the Sept. 29 David M. Vance Stakes at Remington Park. Earlier in the season, Jaxon Traveler, six during 2024, had registered the second graded win of his career in the Grade 3 Whitmore at Oaklawn Park.
Post Time, owned by Ellen Charles’s Hillwood Stable LLC, won two graded stakes in 2024, finished second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, earned nearly $1 million, and was named Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred/The Racing Biz Top Midlantic-bred of 2024. He is trained by Brittany Russell.
Pennsylvania-bred Dontlookbackatall won three straight stakes in 2024, topped by her score in the Grade 3 Caress at Saratoga. A flashy, blaze-faced dark bay daughter of Peace and Justice trained by Christophe Clement, she was bred by A1A Racing and is owned by West Point Thoroughbreds, Scarlet Oak Racing, and Titletown Racing Stables.
This was the first year that Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred and The Racing Biz presented a People’s Voice survey.
